This year it was Jillians turn again to compete at the world famous RHS Chelsea, Florist of the Year competition in London. The Scottish qualifiers were held in September in Glasgow and although there was only one Scottish qualifying place up for grabs, Something Special Flowers allowed three of the girls to enter this wonderful experience. As things turned out on the day it was Jillian who took the qualifying place but it was terrific to see Morna place 3rd and Paula who had won the title of Young florist of the Year in 2013 with a Gold medal, following closely in 5th spot. It is testament to Jillian and her training that she was pushed to the limit by two of her prodigies. The girls were to produce a floral collar which we see in the photo above, of Paula, Morna and Jillian with their designs.
In March it was announced that the 16 qualifiers would be asked to design a fantasy floral dress to be worm at a crystal ball, and so preparations were started for this next exciting chapter in the Chelsea experiences of the last 3 years. Once again accommodation had to be sourced near to the Royal Hospital gardens in Chelsea. The appartment had to be big enough to double up as a work studio for Jillian to work on her final design.
Progress was good, although the heat did take its toll on some of the flowers which had to be discarded from the design as every aspect has to be perfect for competition work to succeed. It was an unexpected honour for Paula to be asked onto the team of designers who would work on the Interflora stand which would also compete for a medal in its own category.
The first delightful news was that Paula and the Interflora team achieved Gold for the second year running with their stunning display. Each of the team working on their very own pod, pieced together to create the finished design.
Next up was Jillian in the main Florist competition. GOLD again!!! fantastic thats 5 medals in 3 years for Something Special Flowers!
A huge thankyou goes out to J Van Vliet (Zwetzloot) and DVE Flowers who sponsored the supply of our flowers. As anyone who does competition work knows, the product has to be of the very best quality and those two companies always supply the very best and freshest product.
To be greeted by a civic reception and be paraded around the town for the school kids and locals to show their appreciation was unexpected to say the least, but the message that success at the very top level can come, with a little hard work, to all; even from a small town like Blairgowrie!
Kids go out and grab those moments with both hands!!
Two florists from Something Special Flowers will travel to Chelsea Flower Show next week. Jillian will compete in the “Chelsea Flower Show Florist of the Year 2014”.
She beat the best in the business to qualify as the only Scottish florist for this year’s finals. The heats were held in Glasgow in September and Something Special Flowers were well represented with Paula, who is the reigning “RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year” placed 5th and Morna, who is also a design florist at Something Special, placed 3rd ; a fantastic achievement at her very first time of entry.
The Chelsea Flower Show is recognised as one of the biggest events of the year and will be a fantastic experience for both florists, although they have an idea of what to expecy now having won medals at previous shows.
As the winner of the Scottish heats, Jillian will be the only florist from a Scottish business to compete, which is a great honour for herself and her business Something Special Flowers.
The finalists have all been given a theme to work with and will be given 3 hours on the day to design and construct a floral piece which will indeed, have to be “Something Special” in order to pick up a Chelsea Gold medal.
The design this year is extremely challenging, as a ball gown to be worn at a fantasy Chrystal ball is to be created.
Jillian’s design is coming on well and will be transported down to London on Tuesday, with the finishing touches done within the arena on Wednesday night.
We will all wait with baited breath to hear the results on Thursday. As always we will keep you all updated by facebook as to her progress and will display her creation in the shop window on our return.
RHS Chelsea 2013
And so the exciting journey begins again!
Congratulations Paula who will represent Scotland at RHS Chelsea 2013. Paula won the junior section of the qualifying heats with her wedding design for a Chelsea garden deigner Gold medal winner. She will now travel to London in May for the finals.
Paula from Something Special Flowers in Blairgowrie won the qualifying heat for entry to RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2013 for the second consecutive year. This caps a fantastic year for her work place “Something Special Flowers” who are based at the Wellmeadow in Blairgowrie. Having won two Silver Gilt medals at last year’s Chelsea competition, Something Special flowers were voted the countries best wedding florist at the wedding industry Oscars; the VOWS Awards last month. “It is a great achievement for Paula and we are all delighted to support her through the exciting challenge ahead” said Jillian. Jillian who won Silver Gilt at last year’s competition and narrowly missed out on qualification by only one point in this year’s heats, for the senior (over 26 year old) RHS Florist of the Year which was won by Amanda Coghill from Wick.

SOMETHING SPECIAL FLOWERS WINS VOWS AWARDS 2012 Scotland’s Top Wedding Suppliers Crowned in Glasgow last night
A Blairgowrie-based Florist company was celebrating on Monday night at Scotland’s wedding Oscars – the VOWS Awards 2012. The company was named top in its category at the event, which took place alongside more than six hundred of its Scottish wedding industry peers at Hilton Glasgow. VOWS stands for Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier of the year and is a celebration of businesses in the Scottish wedding industry which have been nominated for the awards by happy newlyweds for exceptional levels of service. Now in its eighth year, the VOWS Awards 2012 attracted more than 13,000 nominations and 100 Scottish wedding companies made the shortlist. Speaking at the event on Monday night, Jillian of Something Special Flowers was delighted with the win. This is the first time Something Special Flowers has been nominated for a VOWS award. Jillian said: “I feel magic. I’m buzzing and sparkling! This is our first nomination and win. I’d like to thank our customers and fantastic team in the shop.” Monday night’s 80s-themed awards ceremony was hosted by TV personality Keith Chegwin and featured 20 award categories, including the Vows Industry Award won this year by 21cc Fireworks. Stewart Roxburgh at Scottish Enterprise was part of the five-strong judging panel, which also included representatives from VisitScotland and Bridal Buyer magazine. He was impressed by the high standards of entries this year. He said: “In these times when personal referral is everything, it is absolutely essential that the industry responds with creativity and professionalism that not only reflects on our individual brands but on the entire industry in Scotland.”
It is unusual that a business can boast of two qualifiers from the same shop for the finals of RHS Chelsea.
Not only did Something Special Flowers do that in 2012 , but both Jillian and Paula are from the same family, which is unheard of and both won Silver gilt Medals at the first time of asking!
Paula went one better in 2013 winning GOLD and the title of RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year; the first time ever the title has been brought home to Scotland!

Jillian Page and her neice Paula McLagan from Blairgowrie won silver gilt medals at the RHS Chelsea Florist of the year competition held at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
This year’s theme, to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen, was ‘Diamonds are Forever’. The brief was to design and create a chandelier to be hung at HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee dinner.
Jillian of Something Special Flowers impressed the judges with her technique and workmanship which were described as “excellent and exquisite”
Paula, who works alongside her aunt, impressed the judges with her chandelier which was described as “a very clever interpretation of a traditional chandelier style” and the judges marked her highly on her idea, expression of colour and techniques used.
This was the first time either had entered the competition and described it as an emotional rollercoaster overcoming the logistical problems of working so far from home.
“The messages of good wishes were incredible and our thanks go out to all who supported us whether by visiting us at the show or by following our daily exploits on facebook.”
As the only representative from Scotland to qualify for the finals of RHS Chelsea 2012 Florist of the year competition we are excited and proud to boast 2 x silver gilt medals. Well done Jillian and Paula.
