Having qualified with one of the top 16 florist scores in the UK heats for the RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year 2017, Jillian will travel to London for this weekends finals.
Theme for the weekend is “Summer Skies” and all finalists will produce a kite made from floral product.
Jillian will once again be the only Scottish florist represented and so flies the flag for Scotland!.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates throughout the weekend. Best of luck Jillian!
Jillian and husband Stephen will make sure Saturdays weddings at Ballathie House Hotel and Strathallan Castle are well looked after before setting off on their road trip to London with their van fully loaded with the kite structure and the required flowers, kindly supplied and sponsored by J Van Vliet (Zwetzloot).
Once at their apartment in London the work begins to create Jillian’s entry. A long day on Sunday will see the piece develop as far a possible, ready for gentle transport to the venue and placed within the marquee at the famous RHS Chelsea Royal Hospital Grounds for the final touches throughout Sunday Evening.
Judging will be done over night and the winners will be announced on Monday 23rd which is also the day that the Queen visits to admire all the entries.
Jillian will be around on a daily basis to talk to the visitors and make sure her piece remains in top condition until Wednesday night when the kite will be removed and carefully secured back in our van ready for the journey home.
Although the lovely weather forecast for the London venue ties in with the Summer Skies theme, it does bring with it extra challenges for Jillian as keeping her product in the very best competition quality is a challenge in itself and is testament to the quality of product provided by her sponsor J Van Vliet (Zwetzloot) along with Jillian’s years of experience that can keep things at their very best.
We will keep everyone updated on Facebook throughout our journey and try to share the experience as we go.
A huge thank you to the Something Special team who will be looking after the home front in our absence and keeping everyone informed for our Blairgowrie shop.
I know Jillian will do her very best to bring home a medal of some form from the show and we wish to thank everyone for their kind wishes and support.
Delighted for Blairgowrie to be so well represented at the Scottish Wedding Awards. It is fantastic to have such a wealth of talent in our small town which is so well located, to cover the whole of Scotland.
This Year we saw the return of last years winners Gordons Cater Hire and were delighted to have Shona Sutherland of Taystful Cakes along with ourselves, winning awards.
Congratulations to all the finalists. You are all winners!
We have such strong associations, within the wedding industry at Something Special Flowers, that Balrgowrie can be related to as everyone’s “One Stop Wedding Shop”

We first met the band Rival Sons in 2011 and have followed their rise ever since. Now with the release of their 5th album (or 6th if you include their EP) it was an honour to design a bouquet that represented the bands new album cover which is a bright magical experience including lots of coral.
Here we see Jillian with Rival Sons drummer Michael Miley. All the very best with the new album guys. We know for sure it will be a true hit with rock fans worldwide.

This time we are up for Wedding Florist of the Year and are looking forward to a great evening with the top wedding industry suppliers at the Crowne Plaza.
This year it was Jillians turn again to compete at the world famous RHS Chelsea, Florist of the Year competition in London. The Scottish qualifiers were held in September in Glasgow and although there was only one Scottish qualifying place up for grabs, Something Special Flowers allowed three of the girls to enter this wonderful experience. As things turned out on the day it was Jillian who took the qualifying place but it was terrific to see Morna place 3rd and Paula who had won the title of Young florist of the Year in 2013 with a Gold medal, following closely in 5th spot. It is testament to Jillian and her training that she was pushed to the limit by two of her prodigies. The girls were to produce a floral collar which we see in the photo above, of Paula, Morna and Jillian with their designs.
In March it was announced that the 16 qualifiers would be asked to design a fantasy floral dress to be worm at a crystal ball, and so preparations were started for this next exciting chapter in the Chelsea experiences of the last 3 years. Once again accommodation had to be sourced near to the Royal Hospital gardens in Chelsea. The appartment had to be big enough to double up as a work studio for Jillian to work on her final design.
Progress was good, although the heat did take its toll on some of the flowers which had to be discarded from the design as every aspect has to be perfect for competition work to succeed. It was an unexpected honour for Paula to be asked onto the team of designers who would work on the Interflora stand which would also compete for a medal in its own category.
The first delightful news was that Paula and the Interflora team achieved Gold for the second year running with their stunning display. Each of the team working on their very own pod, pieced together to create the finished design.
Next up was Jillian in the main Florist competition. GOLD again!!! fantastic thats 5 medals in 3 years for Something Special Flowers!
A huge thankyou goes out to J Van Vliet (Zwetzloot) and DVE Flowers who sponsored the supply of our flowers. As anyone who does competition work knows, the product has to be of the very best quality and those two companies always supply the very best and freshest product.
To be greeted by a civic reception and be paraded around the town for the school kids and locals to show their appreciation was unexpected to say the least, but the message that success at the very top level can come, with a little hard work, to all; even from a small town like Blairgowrie!
Kids go out and grab those moments with both hands!!
Two florists from Something Special Flowers will travel to Chelsea Flower Show next week. Jillian will compete in the “Chelsea Flower Show Florist of the Year 2014”.
She beat the best in the business to qualify as the only Scottish florist for this year’s finals. The heats were held in Glasgow in September and Something Special Flowers were well represented with Paula, who is the reigning “RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year” placed 5th and Morna, who is also a design florist at Something Special, placed 3rd ; a fantastic achievement at her very first time of entry.
The Chelsea Flower Show is recognised as one of the biggest events of the year and will be a fantastic experience for both florists, although they have an idea of what to expecy now having won medals at previous shows.
As the winner of the Scottish heats, Jillian will be the only florist from a Scottish business to compete, which is a great honour for herself and her business Something Special Flowers.
The finalists have all been given a theme to work with and will be given 3 hours on the day to design and construct a floral piece which will indeed, have to be “Something Special” in order to pick up a Chelsea Gold medal.
The design this year is extremely challenging, as a ball gown to be worn at a fantasy Chrystal ball is to be created.
Jillian’s design is coming on well and will be transported down to London on Tuesday, with the finishing touches done within the arena on Wednesday night.
We will all wait with baited breath to hear the results on Thursday. As always we will keep you all updated by facebook as to her progress and will display her creation in the shop window on our return.
Something Special Flowers were well represented at this year’s qualifying heats for RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year 2014, which were held in Glasgow on Sunday 22nd September 2013
Jillian; business owner and her niece and co-worker Paula; who is current Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2013 were accompanied by Morna for her very first competition entry.
The completion was of a particularly high standard this year but all three showed up well against some of the top florists in the country.
The remit for the day was to produce a collar suitable to be worn at a Woodlands trust dinner.
Jillian remains the master by winning the competition with Morna only 4 points behind in 4th place and Paula placed 5th.
This will be the third year in succession that Something Special have represented Scotland at the finals in London and Jillian now looks forward to the challenges that completion in London brings next May.
“It is an absolute honour to work as part of such a talented team and every competitor deserves recognition for their fabulous work”
“I can’t wait to find out the remit for the final in May.”
